Welcome to cassi

Cassi

Cassi

Hello and welcome to Cassi. Such a sweet little labrador. She has been very well for a lot of years. Her mum is super vigilant and looks after her joints well. But in the last 18 months she noticed some changes and one of her back legs starting to have some problems. These seemed neurological. An x-ray showed low level change and nothing of great significance. So she decided to try physiotherapy.

We have done our assessment, and made some changes to her life that are more suited to this life stage. This has included changing the walk into 2 smaller ones so she has the same amount, but its more managable. We have also given her some excercises to keep her nerves more active. These have been balance excercises. We also noticed some issues in the fore limbs, so we have given some appropriate massage.

Keep up the good work mum and Cassi!

Welcome to Chilli

Chilli

Chilli

Hello and welcome to Chilli. Chilli is such a sweet old man. He is now 16y! He has made it through most his life pain free. But he slowed down in the last year. In the last 3 weeks he really got lame in one leg and it looked more like there was a possible spinal problem effecting his nerves.

Mum decided it was time to get some extra help and make his golden time more comfortable. So we have done our exam and found some issues. We did a treatment and set mum up with a home excercise regime to keep Chilli more comfortable. Some of this regime include excercises to improve nerve health and co ordination, this will in turn improve mental health as well as physical health. At 16y he is a very old man, but that doesnt mean there is nothing we should do.

Keep up the good work mum and Chilli.

Welcome to Mowgli

Mowgli

Mowgli

Hello and welcome to Mowgli. Such a sweet rescue dog. Another that has found itself suffuring elbow dysplasia. Such a shockingly common disease these days. Although its most likely we are simply better at diagnosing it.

He was referred to a specialist who did an arthrscopy. He was very good. He felt there was some drastic surgery needed, but on further investigation only the arthoscopy was needed. It was also suggested an elbow replacement may be needed in the future.

Mowgli did really well and was pain free for a year. But he has now started to show lameness again.

Its always fully expected that following these interventions, arthritis will still creep in, but hopefully later than it would if the intervention was not done. On exam and discussion it seems like arthritis is not the likely cause of lameness yet.

So we have set Mowgli up with some muscle building and a more gentle home regime so we can regain more normal limb use. However, it is likely we need to all work as a team in this case, and so the specialist may need to look at the cartilage in the elbow again, as some more may have broken and so may also need removing. We shall see how his progression goes.

Good luck mum and Mowgli. Your doing a great job.

Welcome to Tess

Tess

Tess

Hello and welcome to Tess. Such a dear little mini Dachund.

Sadly her back was an issue. She has actually been a highly sprightly little tyke, running and jumping all around the home. You would think that would have built up her core muscles well.

But sadly her disk buldged into her spine and caused injury. She was rushed to referal and a spinal disk extrusion was performed that night. She recovered really well, and now 5 weeks after surgery, her walking is fantastic.

But she remains weak in her hind so mum has brought her for physiotherapy. Her body is quite amazing. She has a huge amount of muscle bulk in her limbs, but comparitivly low muscle bulk in her back. Her neurololgical exam showed good coordination which is great, but there is a weakness in the hind limbs.

So there is lots we can do. We have set up a home regime that works on her stamina to slowly build her endurance strength. We are also working her core muscles so she uses her body better. And we have given an excercises to improve her proprioception as this will help the spinal cord heal better.

Keep up the good work mum and Tess. Its very tough in this heat, but take advantage of shady areas and use the house for the excercises too.
